Goal SIP Calculator

A goal SIP calculator works backwards from a target. Enter the amount you want, the years and the expected return; it tells you the monthly SIP needed. Tick inflation if your goal is in today’s money, and step-up if you plan to raise the SIP yearly.

How the yearly return is applied

Calculator sites differ here. “Divide evenly” splits the yearly return equally (12% a year becomes 1% a month) and is what most sites use. “Exact yearly rate” makes the months add up to exactly 12% a year, so results are slightly lower.

Calculating…

How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore?

At 12% a year, reaching ₹1 crore in 15 years needs about ₹19,819 a month. With a 10% yearly step-up you can start lower, at about ₹11,516 a month.

Formula

SIP = (Goal − S × (1 + i)^n) ÷ ([((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)) S = starting amount, i = monthly rate, n = months

With a step-up, the final value still rises in direct proportion to the first instalment, so the calculator solves it exactly.

Set the goal in today’s money

A ₹50 lakh house or college fee today will cost far more in 15 years. Tick “My goal is in today’s money” and the calculator grows the target by inflation first, so you save for the real future cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the SIP needed for a goal?

Enter the goal, the years and the expected return. The calculator solves the SIP formula backwards and shows the monthly amount.

Should I adjust my goal for inflation?

Yes, if the goal is based on today’s prices. Education, housing and retirement costs all rise over time.

What if I already have some savings?

Tick “Add a starting amount”. Your savings grow alongside the SIP and lower the monthly amount needed.

What if the result says zero?

Your starting amount alone is expected to reach the goal in that time at that return.
