How a step-up SIP works
You start with a monthly amount and raise it once a year. With a 10% step-up, ₹5,000 a month becomes ₹5,500 in year two, ₹6,050 in year three, and so on. Most fund houses let you set this up when you start the SIP.
Step-up vs flat SIP
₹5,000 a month for 15 years at 12% grows to about ₹25,22,880. With a 10% yearly step-up, the same plan reaches about ₹43,41,925. The insight box above the chart shows this comparison for your own numbers.
Percentage or fixed amount?
- Percentage step-up grows faster over time and tracks salary increases.
- Fixed amount step-up is easier to budget, and the increase feels smaller in later years.
How it is calculated
Each month, the instalment is added and the balance grows by the monthly rate. The calculator adds this up month by month, which is exact for any step-up.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good step-up percentage?
Many investors match their expected salary growth, often 5% to 15% a year. Pick a figure you can keep up even in a slow year.
Is a step-up SIP the same as a top-up SIP?
Yes. Fund houses use both names, and some call it a booster SIP.
Can I add a starting lumpsum too?
Yes. Tick “Add a starting amount” to combine a one-time investment with your step-up SIP.
Does the step-up continue after my plan ends?
If you choose “Keep investing” in the table, the SIP keeps rising every year for the 25 extra years. “Stop and stay invested” freezes contributions and lets the money grow.
